Welcome to the DES!
If you haven't heard of us before, here is a little bit about our aims as a Society.
The Dorset Expeditionary Society Ltd, (DES), is a registered charity founded to encourage safe adventure opportunities for young people.
We are unique in the UK in training the young people who take part in approved expeditions. Many DES Members take part in the DofE scheme, First Aid courses, Walking group leaders awards, Mountain Leader training and Special Pitch Assessment.
By training and challenging our youngsters we seek to cultivate and promote the personal qualities of service, self sufficiency and leadership. The society's leaders are all volunteers and its programmes are specifically targeted at increasing the scope and depth of challenge to all participants.
We have a website to give you more information on us and what we do. This is located at http://www.dorsetexp.org.uk
We also approve overseas expeditions, which usually take place in the Summer holidays for 1 month. To find out what expeditions are on offer visit http://www.leadingedge.org.uk
Generally expeditions recruit around September-December for the following Summer. Because the expeditions are run 'not-for-profit' and the leaders pay their own fares you will find the expeditions are substantially cheaper than commercial companies and offer much more activites.
The Dorset Expeditionary Society has been promoting adventure opportunities for 25 years...leaders are very well qualified and we have a stringent approval procedure following guidelines from the Young Explorers Trust (www.yet.org) and the latest British Safety standards (BS8848).
